Encryption is a pretty complex subject. Rather than go into a long lecture here I suggest you have a look at GPG at a href="http://www.gnupg.org/" rel="nofollow"http://www.gnupg.org//a . This is a freeware, open source encryption package. If you use Thunderbird for your email client, there's an add-on for GPG users that makes encrypting email about as transparent as it can get.
