Request for changing units? US Army?

My husband is Infantry and after deployment he needed surgeries from injuries, Well, his infantry unit left to Knox and he got stuck in security unit here at Hood. He wants to go back to 1st ID and im sure he has an idea of how to go about it, but im curious myself. How can he do it?
